This is the wash house in which the coal miners would don their work clothes and then clean the coal dust at shift end.
The Atlas Coal Mine near Drumheller (East Coulee) Alberta, Canada has been preserved for visitors’ tours as a National Historic Site and museum. It was closed to coal production in 1979. Miners would change to their work clothes at the beginning of the work shift and pull their street clothes up to the ceiling out of the way till shift end.
